Star is one of those Boise-area cities that has a lot of local charm and a unique history which makes it a great place to visit and live. With a rising population of just under 6,000, it is located just west of Boise and is technically part of the Boise and Nampa metropolitan area. It offers you unique access to big city fun and rural exploration.
So, how did it get its unique name? During the 19th century, the area was most easily identifiable by a large star located on its school house. This star was used as a guide by people moving in and around Boise, who referred to the small town as “Star.” Despite attempts to create an alternative name, it stuck. The lighthearted residents have embraced the moniker and consider it an important part of their cultural identity.
Being so close to Boise (as well as Eagle and Middleton), it is a primarily rural area with suburban-type neighborhoods that feature a variety of modern and classic style homes that are still priced very affordably. Expect multiple story homes in Star, as well as those that integrate more modern architectural concepts. That said, some homes integrate a more gothic-era design for those who enjoy a different kind of design concept.
It is also home to a surprisingly rich wine culture, with several wine tours and tastings available in shops like Helina Marie's Wine Shop and Winery Seekers. It also offers visitors access to some rather “extreme” fun, such as Adrenaline & Extreme Tours skydiving and ZDROP skydiving tours.
However, its close proximity to the foothills make it a popular destination for those seeking outdoor excitement. As a result, it is possible to have a culturally engaging time at the Fansworth Art Museum in the morning, delicious mexican food at El Mariachi Loco Restaurante for lunch, and then travel gorgeous bike trails that same afternoon.
With so many fun and engaging options from which to choose, Star remains one of the great hidden treasures of the Boise metro area.
